Why Process Improvement?

Many serious and repetitive problems (e.g. over budget, late delivery, low quality) in projects are not usually caused by one specific individual or team. They are related to organizational practices and cultural behaviour. These are not things that individual managers can generally fix. These types of problems require focus on the process improvement.

What Is Process Improvement?

Process improvement is the discipline of defining and improving development processes, leading to project and organizational success. Success is defined in terms of faster cycle times, lower development costs, and higher product quality.

Who does CMMI Process Improvement Apply to?

All organizations who, within a development project framework, deliver products-solutions for their own or client use. It could be software or mixed (software and equipment) solutions or even equipment without the software. The term "equipment" covers a large area from the very small (example: a mobile phone) to the very large (example: a plane) by way of the intermediate (example: a car, measuring equipment). The pertinent industrial sector can also vary from management technology (banking systems, client file management, accounting systems) to control-ordering systems (manufacturing plants, power stations) to systems systems (large defence projects, aerospace) to electronic products, etc. The CMMI helps all of these types of organizations.

Benefits of Process Improvement

Surveys and studies show that process maturity pays off with better product quality, ability to meet schedule commitments, and other indicators of organizational performance.
Ultimately, client satisfaction is increased as well as competitiveness and credibility.

Why the CMMI (Capability Maturity Model Integration)?

The CMMI is used as a reference model to guide process improvement efforts in thousands of organizations. For decision-makers, who want to choose suppliers who have proven their ability to develop products of quality, within controlled budgets and time frames, this is becoming an important requirement.
The Software Engineering Institute (SEI) has been the distributor of the CMMI since the earlier 1990s. With the "I" for "Integration", the CMMI has extended its scope of application by adding the "system" discipline to Software Engineering.
Our courses are always based on the most recent version of the model.

Course preview

The Introduction to Capability Maturity Model Integration course introduces participants to the CMMI Model and its fundamental concepts. Course discussion emphasizes the understanding of the five maturity levels and the grouping of process areas (PAs).
This three-day course, officially approved by the SEI, describes a framework that organizations can use to determine their ability to develop and maintain systems; it is a model for organizational improvement. The course is composed of lectures and class exercises with ample opportunity for participant questions and discussions.
Introduction to CMMI helps prepare participants to make valid judgements regarding an organization's implementation of the process areas.

Course Benefits

  • Ability to participate in a CMMI based process improvement program
  • Ability to describe process management and the CMMI improvement principles
  • Ability to use the chosen CMMI model as a member of a SCAMPI (SEI assessment method for the CMMI) team
  • Receive the official SEI certificate of attendance (prerequisite to become a lead evaluator or an instructor or to take the "CMMI Intermediate" course)
