A Mythological Legend
Alcyon: the daughter of Aeolus, the king of
winds. She married Ceyx, the son of the morning
star, Eosphoros or Lucifer. Their household was so
happy that they compared themselves to Zeus and Hera.
Annoyed at such pride, the gods changed them both in
birds, a diver and a halcyon respectively. Since
Alcyone made her nest on the edge of the sea and the
waves relentlessly destroyed Zeus took pity on her
and commanded that the waves should be calm during
the seven days before and after the winter solstice,
the period when the halcyon was hatching her eggs.
These are called the Alcyon days, where storms are
unknown "

Star of the Pleiades
In addition to the legend told by Ovid, we find
Alcyone in another legend… and in astronomy! Atlas
and Pleione had seven daughters known by the name of
Pleiades; one of them was called Alcyone. They were
the companions of Artemise, goddess of nature and hunting. When Orion, giant and courageous
hunter, started to pursue them they fled from him
and he could never capture any of them. Still he
continued to follow them until Zeus, pitying them,
metamorphosed them into doves and stars. Zeus placed
them in the Celestial Sphere in the constellation of
Taurus, where the Alcyone star now shines between
her sister Pleiades

A Beautiful Bird
Scientists have nominated the kingfisher "Alcyone".
There are almost hundred species in the world but
only one in America: the "Kingfisher of America".
The latter is a beautiful blue bird with an orange
belly of rather small size and shiny feathers. It
nests close to streams where it plunges, with great
speed, for food.
